Congratulations to Wei Zhang for his research paper " A Model Cathode for Mechanistic Study of Organosulfide Electrochemistry in Li-Organosulfide Batteries " accepted by Journal of Energy Chemistry

Abstract

Small organic sulfide molecules have the advantages of adjustable structure, precise lithium site and adjustable capacity, and have been widely used in lithium-sulfur batteries in recent years. However, there is still room for further improvement of its redox kinetics and cycling performance. redox mediators show excellent effect on polysulfide conversion, which can greatly improve the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. However, the mechanism by which redox mediators accelerate reaction kinetics remains unclear. In this work, we take diphenyl sulfide as the template system, through theoretical calculation and electrochemical means to analyze the electrochemical reaction mechanism and acceleration mechanism of organic sulfur. It is found that organic sulfur undergoes two redox processes, S-S and C-S bonds, and the synergistic effect of free radical exchange and redox reaction is the key to improve sulfur kinetics. This work not only deeply analyzed the electrochemical reaction mechanism of organic sulfur, but also provided a new idea on how to improve the performance of sulfur positive electrode.
