《In-situ Polymerization Methods for Polymer-based Solid-State Lithium Batteries

In-situ solidification technology (the in-situ conversion of liquid electrolyte precursors to solid-state electrolytes by physical, chemical, or electrochemical methods in packaged batteries) has unique advantages in improving electrode/electrolyte interface contact, simplifying the production process of solid-state batteries, and improving the ionic conductivity of electrolytes. In addition, the liquid electrolyte precursor can penetrate well into the pores of the cathode, so the in-situ solidification technology can construct a continuous ion transport channel inside the cathode, thereby significantly improving the utilization rate of the cathode active material. This review systematically summarizes the in-situ polymerization methods (thermal initiation, ionic radiation, Lewis acid initiation, alkali metal initiation, and electropolymerization) from the perspective of initiators, evaluates the interface stability between initiators and electrodes, analyzes the bottlenecks in in-situ preparation of polymer electrolytes, and proposes feasible improvement schemes. This review will help us to better select initiators for in-situ polymerization to construct high-performance solid-state lithium metal batteries.
